In a Nut Shell
Becoming a volunteer fire fighter is both extremely demanding and rewarding all at the same time. Your first year will be a serious time commitment and challenging at times. However, as you complete modules and respond to calls, it will be life changing. This includes building both lifelong friendships and skills along the way.

Volunteer Expectations
Should you choose this pathway; you will be trained to the highest standards. Each volunteer must undergo hours of classroom, hands-on training. Getting through all three levels will be a rigorous schedule of many different skills, vehicles, and situations. This typically takes upwards of 6 months: 4-7 days per month. Candidates, who successfully complete their training, a back ground check, and with the approval of the officers, will become a volunteer fire fighter in good standing with full rights, benefits, and privileges of Sam Owen Fire Department.
Training
Sam Owen Fire Department is unique in that we believe that a volunteer wants to contribute as soon as possible. So we have developed a four level training course. After successfully completing Level One training, the new volunteer will be able to respond to calls. The next two levels continue to increase the knowledge and skills necessary to meet all the different demands of a volunteer fire fighter. Upon the successful completion of level 2 training, the new volunteer will be able to drive and operate the various apparatus and respond to all calls. Level 3 training is Specially Training. These modules are all available to everyone but are not required to be part of the Sam Owen Fire Department team. For those wishing to proceed further, Level 4 training is This taking and successfully passing Firefighter 1. The first three levels are listed below. Each needs to be completed successfully before beginning the next.

Level 1: These modules provide the student with a general understanding of the position and the station/equipment. Necessary skills will be taught and practiced. Shadowing firefighters responding to emergency calls is part of Level 1 training.
Level 2: These modules build on all the Level 1 knowledge and skills. Students attend In-depth training on knowledge, necessary skills, and vehicles. Successfully passing these modules allows the student to respond to all emergency calls.
Level 3: Level 3 training includes several difficult technical skills that are used in some emergency situations. Level 3 Vehicle training provides the
necessary skills to operate any given vehicle.
Last are classes and related skills in several EMS emergency situations. Knowing about these situations and what can be done at the EMS level will help the student in the everyday functioning of a volunteer fire fighter.
This first year demands a lot of time and dedication on your part. If learning new things, helping others, and making new lifelong friends all while doing something you love, the Sam Owen Fire Department is for you.
